Review: Firefox 3.5 (Release Candidate 2)

Mozilla Firefox 3.5As many of you probably know by now, Firefox 3.5 Release Candidate is available for download. My first impressions have been very good.

The downloadable web font capability is immediately shown (although not a quality example), on the Firefox 3.5 Welcome tab.

However, as with all beta/RC software, you are likely to have some issues. After about 20 minutes of web browsing and playing with the new and improved Firebug 1.4 beta, I hit some snags.

While I can't be certain it was Firefox 3.5, I can confirm that it was not Firebug 1.4, as I uninstalled it completely and still received the same errors. I did not do this for all modules/add-ons so this could have been the cause. Nonetheless here's the succession of errors I received:

Mozilla Crash Report
Restore Session

Errors or not...
Despite receiving these errors, the performance has been second to none. The memory usage is seems to be MUCH lower than the current stable Firefox version. One caveat is the fact that my current browser instance has only been running for a couple hours. Most of you have probably experienced increased memory usage the longer the browser has been opened, just as I have. Hopefully I can keep things going overnight and can report the same improved memory usage tomorrow.

Update: Early reports seem to back-up my claims as well.

Bottom Line
If you don't mind stepping through some of issues or losing some of your add-ons, go ahead and give Firefox 3.5 RC2 a try.

If you count on some of you're add-ons or need something a bit more stable, then you probably want to hold off. I think it's safe to say this goes for most pre-release software though.

Enjoy!
